short history of portraiture

1994 – 1997
from Robert:
A series of approximately 200 Polaroid transfer portrait montages, serving as a kind of archive. The intention was, first, to construct the head as a kind of Baroque emblem, dense and multivalent. I wrote in a statement for the Houston Center for Photography: "The portraits are meant as thoughts made, in the sense that they express an interest not in experience per se, but in the thinking that the visual image can contain. That the work feels like a form of literature goes without saying — as a history, and also as an extended meditation on the theme of the Double, the work is intended to be read."
