Created during his eleven years at Hampshire the syllabi contained in this volume are a reflection of his dedication to broadening his students educational experience, artistic and intellectual development and their understanding of the world. He deeply appreciated the collaborative approach he found among his colleagues at Hampshire, and several of the included syllabi are from classes co-taught with his dear friend, Professor Sura Levine.
Over the course of his life, Robert collected an amazingly deep and diverse personal library. Students and colleagues alike remember Robert carrying large armloads of books to classes. Over four thousand volumes of Robert’s extensive collection now reside in the
Robert Seydel
Reading Room on the top floor of the Hampshire College Library. Many if not most of the images suggested in the syllabi can be found there.
That Robert’s intellectual work as an educator be collected and made available was first suggested by Abraham Ravett. Hard copies and digital files of his syllabi were first collected by Abraham Ravette and his student, Luz Angelica Fernandez. Sura Levine and and one of Robert’s students, Jeane Cohen added additional syllabi, and Jeane created important design elements. Mary Lambert of Studio9, designed final page layout and with Gail Robin Seydel helped with bring the project to fruition.
